The laziness–diligence concept in uzbek and english proverbs: a comparative linguacultural analysis

This article presents a comparative linguacultural analysis of the laziness–diligence concept in Uzbek and English proverbs. It examines how these concepts are represented through their semantic content, evaluative orientation, recurring proverbial images, and associations with human behavior and its consequences. The study focuses on four analytical dimensions: the meanings associated with diligence and laziness, the positive or negative evaluation assigned to these qualities, the images and situations used to express them, and the behavioral outcomes attributed to diligence and laziness. The analysis shows that diligence is positively epresented in both linguistic traditions and is associated with purposeful effort, productive activity, and desirable outcomes, whereas laziness is predominantly evaluated negatively and is associated with idleness, inactivity, and undesirable consequences. At the same time, the two proverbial traditions differ in the ways these meanings are culturally elaborated. Uzbek proverbs place greater emphasis on labor, persistent effort, honest work, personal honor, and social usefulness, while English proverbs frequently represent diligence through productivity, timely action, efficiency, and individual achievement. The study demonstrates that the shared opposition betweendiligence and laziness is expressed through culturally specific semantic associations and proverbial imagery in each language.
