Historical lexis in baburnama and its representation in english translations: a linguocultural and translation analysis

Annotatsiya

The Baburnama, the memoirs of Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur, is an important historical and literary source reflecting the political, military, social, and cultural life of Central Asia, Afghanistan, and India in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Its historical lexical layer contains numerous culture-bound units that preserve information about the institutions and social organization of the period. This study examines the representation of historical words in English translations of the Baburnama, focusing particularly on tarxon and sayyurg‘ol. The study employs comparative, descriptive, contextual, semantic, and linguocultural methods. The analysis shows that historical terms often lack direct English equivalents because they encode culturally and institutionally specific meanings. Three major translation procedures are identified: functional substitution, descriptive rendering, and transliteration. The findings indicate that generalized equivalents may improve readability but can reduce historical and cultural meaning. By contrast, transliteration combined with contextual explanation can preserve the identity of source-culture terms while facilitating reader comprehension. The study argues that the translation of historical lexicon requires a balance between accessibility, semantic adequacy, and preservation of historical specificity.
