Developing critical thinking through collaborative learning

Critical thinking is an essential competence in modern education because students need to analyze information, evaluate evidence, solve problems, and make reasoned decisions rather than simply memorize knowledge. One teaching approach that can support the development of these abilities is collaborative learning. Collaborative learning involves students working together to discuss ideas, solve problems, exchange perspectives, and construct knowledge. This article examines how collaborative learning can contribute to the development of students’ critical thinking skills. It discusses the theoretical relationship between collaboration and critical thinking, identifies important collaborative learning strategies, and considers the conditions that make group learning effective. Research evidence indicates that collaborative problem-solving can have a positive effect on students’ critical thinking. The article argues that collaborative learning is most effective when students are required to explain their reasoning, evaluate alternative viewpoints, justify conclusions, and receive appropriate guidance from teachers.
