The article analyses the cultural factors that shaped the attitude of the Uzbek people towards the animal world and their artistic reflection in twentieth-century prose. Economic practice, ritual order, religious prohibitions and the naming tradition are distinguished as four sources of this attitude. The traces of each source in the literary text are demonstrated on passages drawn from the prose of Utkir Hoshimov. The analysis substantiates that in Uzbek prose the animal is perceived as a member of the family and household system occupying its lower level, and that the tones of responsibility and compassion prevail in the attitude towards it.
