Antibiotics are one of the main discoveries of the last century, which has significantly changed the methods of treating a large number of infections. However, increased consumption has left bacterial communities and ecosystems exposed to large amounts of antibiotic residues. The purpose of this article is to provide a brief overview of the main factors associated with the occurrence of antibiotics in the environment. In addition, we attempted to summarize the behavior of antibiotic residues in the environment and the need for their detection and quantification. In addition, we provide updated scientific and regulatory data on environmental releases of antibiotics and risk assessment of antibiotics to the environment and humans. We propose to reduce environmental pollution with antibiotics, from regulation of environmental causes (such as antibiotic consumption) to regulation of antibiotic waste and risk assessment. Some important intermediate steps are represented by the discovery and quantification of antibiotics and the characterization of their behavior in the environment, which can form the basis for future regulatory decisions.
