Vocal performance competence: content, structure, and componential composition

Vocal performance competence is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that encompasses a holistic system of knowledge, practical skills, artistic abilities, and personal qualities required for effective vocal expression and professional artistic interpretation. In contemporary music education, this competence is increasingly viewed as a key indicator of a performer’s readiness for both academic and stage activities. The present study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the content, structural organization, and essential componential composition of vocal performance competence within a competency-based educational framework. The research is grounded in the theoretical analysis and synthesis of pedagogical, psychological, and musicological literature, which allows for a systematic understanding of the concept. The findings reveal that vocal performance competence includes several interrelated components, namely technical, cognitive, artistic, emotional-expressive, and communicative elements, all of which function in a unified and dynamic system. Special emphasis is placed on the role of interpretative thinking, emotional responsiveness, and self-reflective abilities in shaping a performer’s individuality and artistic authenticity. Furthermore, the study highlights that the effective development of vocal competence requires the implementation of innovative pedagogical strategies that integrate theory with practice and foster students’ creative potential. The results of this research contribute to the advancement of modern vocal pedagogy and provide a theoretical foundation for improving competency-based approaches in music education and professional vocal training.
