Problems of phonism in musicology

This article examines the problem of phonism in musicology, focusing on the harmonic language of contemporary Uzbek composers. Particular attention is paid to the interaction of phonism with harmonic functionality, modal organization, and voice-leading within diatonic and extended tonal systems. The study highlights the transformation of harmonic thinking in comparison with the Classical tradition, especially the increasing expressive and figurative role of harmony alongside its reduced structural autonomy. Drawing on examples from Uzbek compositional practice, the paper analyzes the formation of sonorous effects, the emergence of polyfunctionality, and the renewal of chordal vertical structures. Phonism is interpreted as a significant factor of musical expressiveness, closely connected with national stylistic features of musical thinking. The article concludes by emphasizing the importance of further research into phonism for a deeper understanding of contemporary compositional processes.
