This article discusses the use of liquid membrane ion-selective electrodes in potentiometric analytical methods and the determination of their selectivity coefficient. The relevance of ion-selective electrodes is due to their high analytical accuracy, widespread application, and metrological characteristics. This paper provides a theoretical and practical analysis of the electrode selectivity coefficient based on the Nichols-Eisenman equations, demonstrating the influence of interphase equilibrium, diffusion potential, and ion exchange processes. It is also demonstrated that the difference in the charges of various ions significantly influences the formation of the selectivity coefficient. According to the obtained results, the potentiometric selectivity coefficient coincides with the exchange constant only when the ion exchanger in the membrane is completely dissociated and the primary and secondary ions have the same charge. In other cases, the selectivity coefficient is determined by complex functional relationships.
