The article analyses the historical development of the SCO after the accession of India, Pakistan and Iran, examines changes in the organisation's tasks, its challenges and opportunities. Emphasis is placed on interstate interaction, economic aspects and security issues. The role of the SCO in regional stability and economic co-operation, as well as its contribution to solving the problems of Afghanistan are discussed.
