This information presents research and development based on fundamental knowledge about the silkworm called Bombyx mori L. It highlights development of biotechnological approaches used in sericulture, cocoon processing and resource-saving. The research is devoted to a close development of artifi cial diets for silkworms, their use in various fields of practical application, including in outer-space experiments. The processes of respiration, digestion at B. mori L. and biotransformation of sericulture products and wastes at the enzymatic level have been explored; as well as methods for biocontrol of mulberry pyralid Glyphodes pyloalis Wlk. have been investigated and developed in the IPM system. Biotechnological approaches have been developed for rational use of raw materials and waste left from the silk-making processes, for production of fibroin and sericin, as well as composites and semi-finished products based on them - for pharmaceutical, biomedical, cosmetic and food industries and bionanotechnology. The structural organization of fibroin in fiber and composites has been researched. As the findings show, the research area in question proves to be quite fruitful and its further development will lead to a waste-less, diversified and profitable production of high-tech silk products and goods.
