The article discusses the information covered in scientific literature sources on the pathogenic effect of the prion protein PrPSc as an infectious agent in bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The routes of transmission of the pathogenic form of PrPSc to animals, including through the use of raw materials of animal origin in the ration, are described. The main clinical signs and diagnostic methods of this disease, the infectious activity of various tissues of the animal organism with respect to PrPSc, the veterinary and sanitary rules for prevention and eradication when the disease occurs, as well as the official data of the World Organisation for Animal Health (formerly OIE), are presented.
