The article presents the results of a comparative morphological study of the mucosal relief structures of the ampulla of Vater in laboratory animals (rabbits, foxes, and dogs). The aim of the study was to investigate the tissue composition and structural organization of the mucosal folds of the ampulla. The material consisted of fragments of the duodenal wall with a longitudinal fold, examined using histological and histotopographic methods. It was established that the ampulla of Vater in all studied animals contains numerous mucosal folds forming a complex multilayered trabecular network. The folds are composed of loose connective tissue and are covered on both sides by a single-layered columnar epithelium. Interspecies differences in fold density and the ratio of epithelial to connective tissue components were identified. The findings suggest a possible functional role of these folds in the locking mechanism, mixing of bile and pancreatic juice, and their portionwise evacuation into the duodenal lumen.
